About
I’m Rhian. I walk in the hills of Eryri most weekends, whatever the weather does, and for years I have written every walk down in a paper notebook.
The notebook started as a way to remember which paths were boggy and which bwlch had the stile that is hard to find in cloud. It turned into a habit: distance and ascent off the map, the time I left the car and got back, what the weather actually did as opposed to what the forecast said, and a line or two to myself about what I would do differently. The pages from wet days are wrinkled and some of the pencil has gone soft, which is part of why I wanted a copy somewhere else.
So in the autumn of 2026 I started typing them up here. The site is new; the walks are not. Each entry is dated by the day I walked it, and I am working through the more recent ones first, from 2024 onward. I tidy the spelling and leave the opinions alone.
The name
Wrens are the bird I see most often on these walks, hopping about in the bracken and the walls on the way up, loud for something so small, and apparently not bothered by weather at all. Most of my walks happen in mist. It seemed to fit.
A note on the routes
These are records of what I did on a particular day, not route guides. Paths change, streams rise, and the hills are a lot less forgiving in cloud than these pages might make them sound. If you go, take a map and compass and know how to use them, check the mountain forecast, and turn round when it stops being fun.
Most of the land I walk on is farmed. Close gates, keep dogs on a lead near sheep, and park considerately in the small villages; people live there.
